My mom likes to say that I look homeless when I grow out my beard. Seeking my mother’s approval I point towards John Muir as an inspiration. Half-hobo/Half-naturalist, Muir overcame looking homeless and created our first National Parks. Here in Marin I am blessed to have Muir Woods and Muir Beach close by. In my research on Muir I discovered that upon his immigration to America from Scotland, he settled in Portage, Wisconsin. Now some of you must be thinking, What’s so cool about this small town (population 9,500) in the middle of nowhere? Well, not only did Muir grow up here, but so did two Pulitzer Prize writers and Jeffrey Dahmer - famed Serial Killer, dismemberer and cannabilist.
