Practical Martial Arts

Back in High School I was a big proponent of mixed martial arts. This was the late 90’s and just about the same time that Ultimate Fighting was starting to become poplar.

For a three year time frame I was really hardcore about Muay Thai. My standup was improving with each month I fought. My clinch was awesome and worked well for me because of my height. Elbows and knees were always hard for me to handle, but it made my jaw and abs rock solid.

Sensei Mike and Karen run this great school in Corte Madera called Practical Martial Arts. Today I dropped by during a bike ride out to Tiburon.

There was a time when I was even helping to teach Muay Thai.

It all came to a quick end when I left for Columbia in the Fall of 2001. I had to focus on lightweight rowing. Unfortunately it took up all my time and there was little energy left for outside pursuits.

I hope to get back into fighting condition and compete in some smokers by the end of the summer. It will take a long time to get back the endurance, strength and power, but if I set my sights on it - no one can stop me.
